The name Gallipoli (Caddhrìpuli in Gallipoli dialect) derives from the Greek “Kalé Polis”, whose meaning is “beautiful city”. The city, located along the western coast of the Salento peninsula, extends out onto the Ionian Sea with a coastline of around 20km which also includes the towns of Punta Pizzo, Baia Verde, Rivabella and Lido Conchiglie, and is divided into two parts: the village, which it welcomes the most modern part of the city, and the historic center, located on an island connected to the mainland with a seventeenth-century bridge.
